Celebrate the 20th Annual Eagle Expo in the Heart of the Atchafalaya Basin!

From February 21st-22nd, immerse yourself in the wonders of Louisiana’s Atchafalaya Basin at the 20th Annual Eagle Expo. This beloved event brings together nature enthusiasts, birders, and wildlife lovers for an unforgettable experience filled with expert presentations, scenic boat tours, and community connections.

The festivities kick off on Thursday, February 20th, at 6pm with Animalogy, a fascinating wildlife program hosted at the Bayou Vista Community Center. Sponsored by the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, this event features Bob Tarter from the National History Educational Company of the Midsouth. A lifelong nature enthusiast with a degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Bob will showcase a variety of animals in an engaging and educational program designed to spark appreciation for the natural world.

On Friday, February 21st, and Saturday, February 22nd, explore the stunning waterways of the Atchafalaya Basin and surrounding bayous through guided boat tours. Experienced captains like Captain Caviar and Captain Billy Gaston will lead you through the scenic landscapes, offering insights into the region’s unique ecosystem. Walking tours at the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge will also be available, guiding visitors along trails like the Franklin Trail and Palmetto Trail to spot birds and other wildlife.

Friday evening continues the excitement with a Sunset Social at the Morgan City Wharf at 5:30pm, followed by dinner at Bay City Bistro at 6:30pm. Enjoy a delicious meal while listening to featured speaker Bren Haase, a leader in coastal restoration and ecology. With over 30 years of experience, Bren will share his insights into Louisiana’s efforts to preserve its coastal wetlands and his personal connection to the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary.

Saturday, February 22nd, features a series of engaging sessions at the Clarion Inn in Morgan City. Highlights include a panel discussion on Louisiana Big Year Birding Adventures, where local birders Lawrence Datnoff, Michele Giroir, and Kathy Rhodes share their stories of spotting over 300 bird species in a single year. Facilitated by Marybeth Lima, author of Adventures of a Louisiana Birder, the panel promises inspiration and practical tips for birding enthusiasts.
